Kelarisan: A Handwritten Font That Brings Personality to Branding

Opening the Project: A Blank Canvas and a Fresh Font Choice

It was one of those mornings where the brief felt just open enough to be exciting, but not so vague that it was intimidating. The client—a small, artisanal tea shop tucked into a quiet corner of the neighborhood—wanted a brand identity that felt warm, personal, and a little whimsical. I opened my design board, ready to explore, and decided to start with something I hadn’t used before: Kelarisan.

Kelarisan is a thin, flowing handwritten font that immediately caught my eye for its soft, organic strokes and elegant rhythm. It’s the kind of typeface that doesn’t scream for attention but instead invites the viewer in with a quiet confidence. As I typed out the shop’s name for the first time in this font, I could already picture it on a chalkboard sign or a delicate tea label.

Logo Design: Finding the Right Balance Between Style and Readability

I dropped Kelarisan into the logo mockup, adjusting the kerning and baseline shift to find the right visual balance. At first glance, it looked beautiful—almost too delicate. I knew I had to test it at different sizes and in different contexts. Would it still be legible on a small business card? How would it hold up on a storefront window?

Thankfully, the font’s PUA encoding made it easy to access alternate characters and ligatures, which helped me customize the logo to feel more unique without losing clarity. I ended up using it as the primary logotype with a simpler sans serif as a secondary typeface for supporting text. The contrast between the two created a nice visual hierarchy and ensured the brand remained both expressive and professional.

Packaging and Labels: Adding a Human Touch

One of the most satisfying moments came when I applied Kelarisan to the tea packaging. The client wanted each flavor to have a handcrafted label, and the font’s flowing lines gave that handmade feel they were after. I used it for flavor names and short descriptors, pairing it with a clean serif for ingredient lists and brewing instructions.

On a sticker label, the font looked elegant and slightly nostalgic—perfect for a product that aimed to evoke comfort and tradition. I made sure to test the print files at actual size to confirm legibility, especially on smaller pouches. It worked best at 14pt and above, so I noted that in the brand guidelines for future use.

Web and Social Media: Keeping the Tone Consistent Across Platforms

When it came to the website and Instagram templates, I used Kelarisan more sparingly. It shines as a headline or accent font, so I applied it to hero section titles and callout quotes. For body copy and navigation, I paired it with a clean sans serif to maintain readability across devices.

On mobile screens, the font’s thin strokes could become too light, so I adjusted the weight using CSS and made sure the contrast against the background was strong enough. The result was a homepage header that felt personal and inviting without compromising usability.

Font Pairing: Finding the Right Companion

Pairing Kelarisan with the right secondary font was essential. I found that a classic serif like Playfair Display offered a nice contrast in structure while maintaining a similar elegance. In other cases, a modern sans serif like Lato provided a clean, contemporary balance. The key was to let Kelarisan take the spotlight in headlines and logo work while relying on more neutral fonts for body text and functional elements.

Practical Considerations: Licensing, Language, and File Formats

Before finalizing the brand system, I double-checked the font’s licensing to ensure it covered both print and digital use, including commercial applications like merchandise and web templates. Kelarisan comes with multilingual support, which was a bonus in case the brand ever expanded beyond local markets.

The file formats included OTF and TTF, which worked seamlessly in both Adobe apps and web design tools. Having access to alternates and ligatures also gave me flexibility when designing custom graphics or promotional banners.

Final Impressions: When and Where to Use Kelarisan

As the project wrapped up, I found myself reaching for Kelarisan more often than I expected. It’s a font that feels both timeless and modern, perfect for brands that want to feel approachable yet refined. It works best as a display or headline font, especially in logo design, packaging, and social media visuals.

For designers working on boutique brands, creative studios, or small businesses, Kelarisan is a strong contender when you want to inject a human touch into your typography. Just remember to test it in real-world applications, pair it thoughtfully, and always consider legibility across formats.

Designing with Intention: Letting the Font Serve the Brand

In the end, the tea shop’s identity felt cohesive and expressive—Kelarisan played a big role in that. It reminded me that typography isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about tone, personality, and connection. When used with intention, a font like Kelarisan can elevate a brand from good to memorable.
